The last statement was about the relationship between generation z and social media which I interesting about most of gen Z got influenced by social media and they are focus on social media more than spending time in the real world.
I continued to explore more about identity and the issue of gen Z in social media world. I had read the book name “The mirror state” which is about identity, self-image, ideal-I, and external reality. I think all of these keywords are cover the detail of my curtain topic. I try to combine all of those words to make a visual experiment.
From the information that I got from this book, I found that our identity and appliance were from many constructions are combine together but all of those we can choose by ourselves. I started by trying to make an experiment by creating a layer of artwork to metaphor about identity constructions, it is different tools and styles in each layer but when it overlapping it can be the thing that you choose and create that seem like the construction of identity.
From the first experiment and theory, I interesting to explore more about self and identity. Then I found the self-concept theory, it is about the image that we have of ourselves. These include 3 things, First is Self it is how you see yourself, Second is Self-esteem it is how much you value yourself, and third is Ideal self it is how you wish you could be. From this research topic, I create a visual in a lenticular platform that can see on two sides in one object, and I apply the self-concept theory in this experiment by one side I show my real image and on another side, I show a nice image that can be linked to most of gen z usually post an exaggerate picture than reality as like the Ideal self and Real self
This experiment, make me interesting in people in a virtual world and the real world and I try to link those with self-image and body-image then make me come up with a third experiment. This development comes from the background of gen Z usually post their picture in the way that they wish to make them look nice than look real as the reality.I try to create an appearance wheel that people can choose the best that they want or the way that they want to be. This research and experiment make me think that in reality people able to choose their self and image but it is quite difficult to be as there expect. Then it makes me interesting in simulated virtual elements or virtual space to fulfill their needs, then I try to experiment by using the AR technique that plays with filter.
As I read many articles that related to self-concept and I found one quote by Thomas Szasz an American psychiatrist “The self is not something that one finds. It is something that one creates.” I am interested in creating the self which is the background was from most of gen Z feel good with their appearance, their body image, and their self on social media world than in the real world.
My expectation is a space that people can create themselves in the way what they wish or what they want in the virtual space, which they could not be in the real world or in reality. By they can choose their appearance and the elements that they want.
